13 Moody Refinery Pictures That Will Change Your Mind About Petroleum Processing

January 13, 2022 in History, Gallery

Like other industrial sites near large cities in China, local authorities identified ░░░░ Petroleum as a major cause of poor air quality[1]. In its later years it was fined for environmental violations and slated for relocation.[2] The ░░░░ refinery only operated[3] from 2004 to 2018 before being shut down[1].

Production units at the refinery included atmospheric and vacuum distillation columns, catalytic cracking, delayed coking, hydrotreating, gas separation, and sulfur recovery units. When in operation the products were gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, MTBE, propylene, petroleum coke and sulfur.[3]

“China is the center of world commodity production, but most consumption
occurs elsewhere. Who is responsible for the associated carbon
emissions? The shift of industrial production from Europe and the United
States to China has shifted the social and environmental consequences of
production. The local impacts (ecosystem destruction, urban
environmental degradation) have generated considerable resistance, but
so far it has mostly been contained…”

Most of the interiors at Xiancun were not all that interesting as many buildings had been gutted down to bare concrete or too demolished to risk entering. Did find a few mildly interesting things though.
